Energy Sharing Communities (E.ON)

The Challenge

E.ON UK’s innovation team needed to rally internal and external support around Energy Sharing Communities, a promising but technical concept spanning energy, infrastructure, economics, and public policy.

The Approach

To find the heart of the story, I interviewed experts and restated Energy Sharing’s purpose and benefits into clear, compelling messaging.

Then I went further, distilling the story into a form so clear and simple anyone could appreciate it at a glance.

To understand how the idea would land with the public, I designed nationally representative YouGov polling to test the concept from multiple angles.

Using the research, I built a map of segment-specific angles and approaches rooted in E.ON’s two main priorities: lowering customer bills and driving the green transition.

To add visual impact, I briefed an external agency to produce clear and appealing infographics and animations in E.ON’s house style.

With SEO searches complete, I built a content pipeline of blogs, social posts, C-suite thought leadership, internal presentations, and external comms to carry the message out into the world.

The Result

Momentum from the campaign translated into real impact: a partnership and funding for the UK’s first energy-sharing pilot in London.

Endless Possibilities: The chemists building molecules atom by atom (The Guardian)

This Guardian feature on a groundbreaking organic chemistry technique—skeletal molecular editing—posed several challenges. Here’s how I navigated them:

Challenge
Even in the science pages, stories about chemistry are often seen as too dry or complex for mainstream audiences.

Solution
I pinpointed the aspects of skeletal molecular editing most likely to engage the Guardian’s audience, focusing on its potential for personalised medicine and sustainable plastics.

Challenge
The topic was especially technical, dealing with a new method in chemistry that so far only specialists were excited about.

Solution
I conducted in-depth desk research and secured top experts for the piece, arriving at the pitch with compelling quotes that convinced the editor to approve it.

“We’re one of the only fields of science that at its core is about making things that have never existed anywhere else in the universe, and would never have existed if we didn’t intervene,” he enthuses. “We get to manipulate matter at the atomic level to shape it to whatever purpose we can think of.”

Mark Levin, Professor of Chemistry, University of Chicago

Challenge
Getting specialist scientists to explain their areas of expertise clearly and simply is notoriously difficult.

Solution
I used interpersonal skills to get the most out of interviews, creative imagery and metaphor to make experts’ ideas accessible, and vivid, engaging writing to keep readers hooked.

The Result

The piece was reprinted as part of the Guardian’s international roundup of the best weekly journalism, and I was invited to speak about it at the UK Conference of Science Journalists. The panel’s focus was on translating complex technical topics for mainstream audiences. You can watch the session at the UKCSJ24 Website, here.

Messaging

Messaging Workshop
(Norrsken VC)

The Challenge

Norrsken VC, the Impact Fund established by Klarna founder Niklas Adalberth, was on its way to becoming Europe’s leading impact investor, but their messaging wasn’t aligned.

They wanted to boost deal flow, but lack of clarity held them back from the PR that could make it happen.

The Approach

Through exercises and guided discussions that encouraged debate before turning to alignment, I steered the group to explore:

What they do
Their 20-year roadmap
The unique problem they solve
How they solve it
How they relate to different audiences
How they relate to their competition
Their specific voice

Together, we identified and articulated the team’s real obstacle to alignment:

They wanted to distinguish the fund as a profit-generating venture without losing the older Norrsken Foundation’s reputation for social impact.

To overcome it, I guided the team to consider Norrsken’s value from the perspectives of different stakeholders while focussing on the intersecting benefits to each:

A team experienced in growing unicorns

Entrepreneur access to a unique impact ecosystem

Impact KPIs and adherence to UN Sustainable Development Goals

A diverse portfolio exceeding expectations in capital returns

An evidence-based approach to impact

The outcome was a clear messaging framework for entrepreneurs, investors, and external audiences, complete with core copy, straplines, and boilerplates.

The Result

Since the workshop, Norrsken has increased its PR output and continued closing new deals. Notably, investments in Einride and 1KOMMA5° have become unicorns and now rank among the top greentech companies globally.

Norrsken is now Europe’s leading impact investor, and they’ve got the messaging to tell the world why.

Operations Management

Redesigning E.ON’s content workflow

The Challenge

E.ON brought me in to help produce content at scale, but there was a problem. Without clear ownership of publishing tasks or a defined journey for content in development, a lot of work never made it to publication.

The Approach

To understand the bottlenecks, I spoke with leadership and team members across departments. These were busy professionals with significant responsibilities, and communications wasn’t always their top priority.

The solution was to minimise the number of stakeholders for each piece of content while clearly defining their roles. After securing buy-in from subject-matter experts across the business, I established a formal process for all future content. Responsibility was centralised within my department, freeing other teams’ time while ensuring content moved smoothly from concept to publication.

The Result

End-to-end publishing time was reduced by more than 50%.

The problem of already planned and produced content not making it to publication for internal reasons was eliminated.

E.ON increased its presence across multiple segments with hundreds of pieces of accurate, impactful content.

Podcasting

I’ve developed, produced, and executive produced hundreds of radio programmes and podcasts for BBC Radio 4, the BBC World Service, BBC Radio 3, The Guardian, Audible, Persephonica, and a range of private clients. Here are a few of my favourites, and roles I’ve played making them:

Automation Nation
Long-form Documentary Maker

The last in a three-part series for the BBC World Service’s flagship current affairs thread The Compass, this episode distills complex macroeconomic concepts into compelling, sound-designed stories.

Behind the Scenes on Sesame Street
Feature Producer and Host

A BBC World Service feature that I produced and presented about the progressive beginnings of Sesame Street.

LockBit: How an infamous ransomware gang found itself hacked
Chat-Format Podcast Producer, Composer

I produced this episode of the Guardian’s Today in Focus podcast from start to finish. As well as sourcing the story from former intelligence analyst Jon DiMaggio, I handled the recording, editing, scripting, mixing, and music.

Inside COP: Looking for a Plan in Finance
Editor

As Editor for this episode of the official COP30 podcast, I helped world-leading experts in climate diplomacy and finance translate complex concepts like blended finance, developing country reinvestment schemes, and debt swaps into clear explanations for a general audience.

The Reluctant Millionaires
Executive Producer

Working with Abigail Disney, a leading voice in the Patriotic Millionaires, I developed and executive produced this BBC documentary about ultra-rich campaigners demanding higher taxes on the wealthy. The programme was so successful the BBC commissioned additional versions for other networks.
